Drone Inspection

Safe and flexible inspections of hard-to-reach areas by combining marine inspection expertise with drone-based Remote Inspection Techniques (RIT).

What is Drone Inspection?

Remote inspection of hard-to-reach areas

Conducting inspections in hard-to-reach and hazardous locations remains a challenge in the maritime and offshore industries. Traditional access methods such as cherry pickers and scaffolding are not always practical, while Rope Access may not always be suitable or safe. For areas such as ballast tanks, cargo tanks, cargo holds, jack-up legs and structural components of ships and offshore installations, drone inspection offers an efficient alternative.

MME Group combines certified marine inspection expertise with drone technology to support safe and efficient inspections. In collaboration with specialized drone companies, our Marine Survey Division provides drone-assisted inspections and can combine these with UTM and other inspection techniques where required.

Benefits

  • Safe access to hard-to-reach and hazardous locations
  • Flexible and efficient inspections with reduced need for scaffolding and access equipment
  • Cost-effective solution that supports faster inspection and maintenance planning

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

Typical applications of Drone Inspection

Drone inspection can be used to assess structural components in hard-to-reach areas on ships, offshore installations and other marine assets.

  • Ballast tanks

  • Jack-up legs

  • Cargo tanks

  • Structural components
  • Cargo holds

  • Offshore installations
  • Other difficult-to-reach areas

  • Ship superstructures

Performance overview

Strengths and limitations of Drone inspection

Strenghts

  • Safe access to difficult and hazardous areas
  • Reduced need for scaffolding and other access equipment
  • Efficient visual inspection of large or hard-to-reach areas
  • Can support inspection planning and maintenance decisions
  • Can be combined with UTM and other NDT techniques
  • Suitable for inspections in ports, shipyards and offshore environments

Limitations

  1. Drone operation can be affected by weather, lighting and environmental conditions
  2. Not all enclosed or confined spaces are suitable for drone inspection
  3. Visual inspection alone cannot determine material thickness or all types of defects
  4. Additional NDT may be required for detailed condition assessment
  5. Class and project requirements may determine whether drone-based inspection is suitable
