Hardness Testing (HT)

Measures material hardness to assess strength, wear resistance and heat treatment quality. Supports quality control and material verification.

What is Hardness Testing?

Measuring resistance to deformation

Hardness Testing (HT) is used to determine the resistance of a material to indentation and deformation. Hardness values provide valuable information about material characteristics such as strength, ductility, wear resistance and the effectiveness of heat treatment processes.

The test is performed by pressing a specifically designed indenter into the material surface under controlled conditions. The hardness is then determined by measuring either the penetration depth or the size of the indentation left by the indenter.

Based on the used method, the measured hardness is expressed in Rockwell (HRC), Vickers (HV) or Brinell (HBW) values. Testing can be conducted on-site using portable equipment or in our Mechanical Laboratory using stationary test systems.

Benefits

  • Confirms material properties and heat treatment effectiveness
  • Supports quality control, material verification and failure investigations
  • Available both on-site and in the laboratory

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

Typical Applications of HT

Visual Testing is commonly used as a first-line inspection method to assess the condition and integrity of materials, components and structures.

  • Welded joints
  • Structural steelwork
  • Heat treated components
  • Piping systems
  • Pressure vessels
  • Machined components
  • Forgings and castings
  • Marine assets

Performance overview

Strengths and limitations of Hardness Testing

Strenghts

  • Rapid and reliable assessment of material properties
  • Confirms the effectiveness of heat treatment processes
  • Portable equipment available for on-site testing
  • Limited surface preparation required
  • Results can be correlated to material strength characteristics
  • Suitable for quality control and material verification
  • Multiple testing methods available for different materials and applications

Limitations

  1. Produces a small indentation in the tested material
  2. Surface condition can influence measurement accuracy
  3. Different materials may require different test methods
  4. Results are limited to the tested location
  5. Proper surface accessibility is required
  6. Interpretation may require conversion between hardness scales
