Visual Testing (VT)

Detects visible surface imperfections, damage and corrosion through direct visual examination. A fast and cost-effective inspection method that supports safety, quality and asset integrity.

What is Visual Testing?

Keeping a close eye on quality

Visual Testing (VT) is the oldest and most widely applied Non-Destructive Testing method. The inspection is based on the visual examination of a component, structure or weld to identify visible surface indications such as corrosion, cracks, damage, deformation and misalignment.

Inspections can be performed directly by a qualified inspector or with the aid of equipment such as magnifying glasses, mirrors, borescopes and digital camera systems. Visual Testing forms the foundation of many inspection programmes and is used across virtually all industries.

Benefits

  • Fast detection of visible surface indications such as corrosion, cracks and physical damage
  • Cost-effective inspection method requiring minimal equipment and preparation
  • Suitable for a wide range of assets and structures across multiple industries

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

Typical Applications of VT

Visual Testing is commonly used as a first-line inspection method to assess the condition and integrity of materials, components and structures.

  • Welded joints
  • Machined components
  • Pressure vessels
  • Piping systems
  • Steel structures
  • Offshore structures
  • Forgings and castings
  • Marine assets
  • Storage tanks

Performance overview

Strengths and limitations of Visual Testing

Strenghts

  • Low inspection costs and minimal equipment requirements
  • Portable inspection equipment allows use in the field and on-site locations
  • Immediate results without lengthy analysis or processing
  • Minimal surface preparation required before inspection
  • Suitable for a wide range of materials, components and structures
  • Can be performed during fabrication, operation and maintenance activities
  • Often serves as an effective first-line inspection method before advanced NDT techniques

Limitations

  1. Only visible and accessible surfaces can be inspected
  2. Internal defects cannot be detected directly
  3. Surface condition may affect inspection reliability
  4. Detection capability depends on lighting and accessibility
  5. Results depend on inspector experience and interpretation
